New Year's Day snow a bust for Vail but looks promising this weekend

By Reid Griebling

January 2, 2009 —  Well the New Year was rung in with a total bust weather-wise as a weak system on Thursday Jan. 1 weakened even more as it moved inland.

We do have a good shot of snow tonight (Jan. 2) and into Saturday Jan. 3 as this next Pacific system is stronger. A cold front will move through the northern and central mountains early Saturday as winds will increase out of the northwest.

Expect winds in the 15-25 mph range with gusts into the 50's above timberline. This storm is forecasted to drop anywhere from 4-8 inches by Saturday night, and temps will drop dramatically as the cold front moves through.

Saturday Jan. 3 looks to be cold with on mountain highs only in the teens and brisk winds. Pretty much the same forecast for the early part of the week. I believe snow totals with this storm will be relatively lower than forecasted (3-5 inches) as we are moisture limited, however, with high winds from the west/northwest snow will get blown around which will give us some pockets of good snow on the leeward side of Vail and Beaver Creek.

Our pattern for the next five days looks good as we should see storms move in every other day or so, we will watch.

Enjoy!

Vail will see New Year's Day snow and with luck a fluffy 2009

By Reid Griebling

December 31, 2008 —  An incredible December 2008 leaves us this New Year's evening.

Over 8 feet at Vail and Beaver Creek on the ground and 2009 looks to greet us with more powdery white stuff. Starting late December 31 we will begin to see our next system approach from the northwest. Winds will increase, moisture will follow. Our best shot of snow shows up new years day.

Snow and winds will increase as the day moves on with winds in the 15-25 mph range and gusts of 60 mph on ridge tops. Totals for Thursday will be small (1-3 inches) but snow will increase through the day Thursday the first.

Snow will turn to showers late Thursday Jan. 1 and linger through the evening. Totals for Friday Jan. 2 look promising as northwest winds will shift snow around, especially in exposed areas. Look for totals in the 3-5 inch range with windblown pouches double.

Temperatures will fall New Years Eve and stay cold through Friday. Look for on mountain highs to be 15-25 degrees and lows over night in the single digits. Windchill values will be high so be sure to cover exposed skin areas. We see another shot of snow showers arriving Saturday Jan. 3. We will watch.

December 31, 2008 12:00 p.m.
Weather:
Temperature at 29.4 degrees
dew point at 13.9 degrees
pressure gradually falling at 30.08 inches
calm winds
58% humidity

Have a happy and safe New Year. Enjoy!

Snow should fall on Vail and Beaver Creek for New Year's Day

By Reid Griebling

December 29, 2008 —  A scattered sky of cirrus clouds will be with us into Dec. 30 hours as a ridge of high pressure noses in from the southwest.

It will be perfect weather for skiing and shoveling, as temps will rise into mid 30's in the lower valleys and remain mild on mountain with highs in the low to mid 20's.

Numerous clouds will remain with us until mid week when we see our next system move in from the northwest. This next system will arrive Wednesday evening Dec. 30, giving us a quick shot of snow before another system rides in on its heels.

Expect clouds to increase Wednesday and showers to begin overnight. Snow totals won't be as high as we have seen in recent weeks due to the origin of these next storms, usually storms from the northwest, which lack good amounts of moisture, but do bring with them cooler temps.

Expect morning snow totals for for the first of the year to be right around the 2-5 inch range. Temps will drop once the front moves through early Jan. 1 with highs only in the teens and brisk winds (10-20 mph) from the northwest. Another system moves in early Friday, Jan. 2, giving us another shot at some fresh snow.

We will keep watch as the week progresses, however, it looks like we will have fresh snow to start 2009.

Finally, with a few days of clear skies and holiday guests chomping at the 12 feet of cumilative snow that has fallen at Vail and Beaver Creek, some snow-riders will venture into the backcountry.

If you are planning on skiing off piste, please check with the Vail (479-4652) and Beaver Creek (845-6652) ski patrol as conditions are bound to change with warmer air moving in.

You can also gain information from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (C.A.I.C.) at http://avalanche.state.co.us. This is a useful site that is updated everyday. Enjoy!

Cold air will be the norm in Vail this week
A great look at Vail Village with tons of snow on buildings. It truly was a white Christmas in Vail.

Cold air will be the norm in Vail this week

By Reid Griebling

December 27, 2008 —  A frigid day to start the weekend as a northwest flow streams in very cold air. High temps on mountain will only get into the single digits and wind chill values will be well below zero degrees. Winds will be in the teens and twenties throughout the day with gusts higher over ridge tops.

Six inches fell overnight Friday at Vail and The Beav' chimed in with eight inches. A chance of snow tonight as a northwest flow will be the norm for the next five days.

I don't see any great accumulating snow this evening (1-4 inches). Sunday looks like a great day to ski with temps rising (mid 20's on hill) with light winds. This will be the pattern up until mid week when we have another chance at snow starting Wednesday.

A look at a south facing aspect that could actually be skied because of recent snow.
Reid Griebling

I personally have been skiing this past week (thank you Devin and Regina) and it has been great. Eight feet of snow before the beginning of 2009 is just what we needed as January is normally our driest and coldest month.

Finally, I took a few photos on the 24th of December and as you can see, the north side of I-70 (south facing) is covered with snow, and as any local knows, when south facing aspects are covered, it means we have had lots of snow and great temps. Enjoy!

Devin says "you're welcome" and Reg thanks you for the ski and snowshoe days. Loving the fact that we will get some warmer temps early this week. You were correct, Sunday was a great day to be outside.
