White Christmas in Vail as Winter Storm Warning continues

By Reid Griebling

December 26, 2008 —  A relatively warm Christmas Day saw a dusting of snow and calm winds, light snow fell for much of the day, but nothing really measurable.

A powerful winter storm is lurking to our west and dumping good amounts of snow in Utah. The Vail Valley is under a WINTER STORM WARNING, as much of the western slope is also. Forecasters are calling for heavy amounts of snow to fall overnight tonight (Thurs.) but it looks like this system has stalled in Utah and that could mean smaller amounts of snowfall in Colorado.

Right now the mercury reads 27 degrees, the dew point is 23.1 degrees and the humidity is at 85%. Winds are calm with breezes coming from the east and the barometric pressure has tanked since this morning and is holding steady at 29.68 inches. We have moisture moving in from the S.W. and a cold front moving in from the northwest.

Once these two collide we should see a good amount of snowfall.

Morning reports for Friday should range anywhere from 6-10 inches at Vail and The Beav' with higher amounts on S.W. facing aspects. Forecasters are calling for over 2 feet to fall by early Saturday, however, the stalling of this storm means we will most likely see lower totals than expected.

Temps for Friday will be chilly on mountain with high barely reaching the low teens and brisk winds (15-25 mph) from the N.W. Wind chill values will be low so if you are planning on skiing Friday, bundle up.

We have a slight chance of showers on Saturday and the sun should poke through for Sunday and Monday. Overall it looks like another great weekend of skiing at Vail and Beaver Creek.

Enjoy!

Vail weather should be white for Christmas

December 22, 2008 —  Once again, Vail and Beaver Creek are under a WINTER STORM WARNING and are victim to over a billion stellar dendrites (snowflakes) as I write on the evening of Dec. 21.

A southwest flow is blessing us with another round of heavy snowfall that will stay with is through Dec. 22. Right now at 8,100 feet the temperature is holding steady at 25 degrees, the dew point is at a pleasant 22 degrees, and the relative humidity is at 85 percent, giving us great dynamics for good snowfall.

Pressure is steady at 29.60 inches and winds are light from the west with a few gusts in the teens. It looks to be another great day on the hill Tuesday morning.

On-mountain temps for Tuesday's powder day will be mild, the third day of winter brings with it highs in the high teens and winds from the N.W. ranging from 10-15 mph. Expect good snowfall totals for the morning report ranging from 6-10 inches, as we have a good stream of moisture coming in from the southwest (favoring The Beav'), good news for those of you who make it to Blue Sky early.

Our forecast for the remainder of the week looks promising as this storm will move out Tuesday evening leaving us under a N.W. flow which gives us a shot of (oragraphic) showers Wednesday, and additional snow, albeit low totals (1-3 inches).

We see another quick blast shoot through Christmas Day from the northwest giving us another shot of snow (2-4 inches). High pressure tries to nose in this weekend before another round of snow moves in early week. We will watch.

Overall it looks like a great Christmas week with storm totals from Mon-Tues. storm in the 10-14 inch range, and light dustings to follow through Friday.

Finally, Happy Holidays, and if you’re lucky enough to be with us in "Happy Valley" remember, nothing cures the economic blues like face shots of white gold. Enjoy!

Cold and snowy Northwest storms taking aim at Vail starting tonight and all weekend

Reid Griebling keeping an eye on snow conditions

Cold and snowy Northwest storms taking aim at Vail starting tonight and all weekend

By Reid Griebling

December 19, 2008 —  Snow keeps falling in the Vail Valley, as Vail received 7 inches as of this morning and The Beav' reports 6 inches.

The weekend looks good for another round of snow as we will watch the next system move into our area later this evening and last through the night. This next storm will blast out of the N.W. bringing with it much colder temps and windy conditions.

As of now the storm is in southern Idaho creeping southeast. Snow totals from this storm will be moderate as we are moisture limited, however we could see locally higher amounts if oragraphic lift cooperates.

Expect 4-5 inches by the Saturday morning report at both resorts. Saturday will be partly cloudy and cold as the high on the mountain will only reach the low teens. Winds will blow out of the northwest as the storm passes and shift to S.E. during the day Saturday. Windchill values will be very cold, expect -15 degrees windchill on mountain, with winds at 15-20 mph and gusts in the 30 mph range.

Sunday we will watch as another more potent system moves its way along the western coast, shifting east by Saturday and moving into Colorado late Sunday night and early Monday. This next storm will favor the southwest, but the central and northern mountains will get their share of snow.

Snowforecast.comis calling for 8-12 inches by Tuesday morning, however, I think this storm will drop 10 inches at most seeing that it is coming from the S.W., I hope I'm wrong.

Finally, it looks as the weather pattern will change for a couple of days as high pressure build in, although we could see a quick shot of snow Christmas Eve into Christmas Day.

Enjoy!

More snow to cover Vail, Beaver Creek before Christmas

More snow to cover Vail, Beaver Creek before Christmas

By Reid Griebling

December 17, 2008 —  There’s been 10 inches new at Vail in the past 24 hours and 11 new at The Beav'. Wolf Creek saw another 17 inches last night to add on to their epic week of snow.

As of this morning we are under a WINTER STORM WARNING until Thursday afternoon as a moist S.W. flow will bring more snow to the region. Areas in the southwest (Durango, Telluride, Sliverton...) will see the brunt of the action as numerous little disturbances move through Colorado today and tomorrow bringing unstable air masses and breezy conditions.

Temperatures will be mild per say as highs will be in the upper teens and low 20s and lows will dip into single digits overnight. As I write, the temperature in Edwards is 15 degrees, with 80 percent humidity and a dew point right around 10 degrees, calm winds, and steady pressure. Our forecast for the next 36 hours looks promising as light to moderate snow will begin to fall by afternoon and last well into Thursday.

We could see anywhere from 8-14 inches by late Thursday at Vail and The Beav' with larger amounts on S.W. facing slopes, favoring Beaver Creek. Winds will increase from the S.W. today, with speeds in the teens to mid-20s and gusts into the 40s. Our five-day forecast looks promising as we will see snow through Sunday, before a break in the action just before Christmas. Enjoy!
