Light to moderate snow expected over next few days
January 24, 2008 — Hello powder hounds, good news for those of you drooling for some face shots again: We are again in an unsettled weather pattern that should be dumping some more "white gold" on our valley within the next few days.
Today (Thursday) we should see southwest winds increase later in the afternoon and overnight as a quick storm moves through. This storm will hit the southwest part of the state with moderate to heavy snowfall through the afternoon Friday. Areas like Wolf Creek, Telluride, and Silverton should see 6-10 inches by the end of the day Friday. The central and northern mountains will see little accumulation from this storm (1-4 inches) by late Friday, however, we do have a strong low waiting in the wings.
Saturday should be a great day to ski the Talons Challenge at the Beav’, with mild temps (20s on the hill) and mild winds early and increasing as the day goes on. Sunday we will begin to see the barometer fall as a low pressure system moves into the Great Basin.
The jet stream looks favorable (heading due west to east) for our area and we should see increased moisture with this system. Sunday and Monday both look active with light to moderate snow both days. Winds will be strong on Sunday as the low moves through, winds in excess of 60 mph at tree line should be expected.
Monday snow will stick around most of the day with snow totals ranging from 5-10 inches at both resorts. Tuesday should be the day to ski as the skies will clear with colder temps and fresh snow (4-7 inches). This next system will not be as cold as previous storms but we will see temps drop all three days (Sun-Tue). Expect temps to be in the teens during the day on the hill and single digits overnight. We will keep our fingers crossed for another bluebird powder day on Tuesday.

Happy skiing...

Weather will warm up as the week continues
January 21, 2008 —
Happy MLK day to all, hope some of you have the day off to enjoy the outdoors.
The very active weather patterns have shifted away from the Rockies, but cold weather has helped keep the snow soft and the skiing is still great at Vail and Beaver Creek; you just have to look a little harder.
We should see some snowfall for the remainder of today and this evening. Snow totals by Tuesday morning should be around 3-5 inches at both Vail and The Beav’.
Moisture, cold temps, and light winds will prevent this storm from becoming significant in any way, but the added snow is always welcome.
Wednesday and Thursday should be fairly quiet, although there is a chance for snow both days. Friday night, and through the weekend we could see the jet stream move to a more westerly flow with a low pressure system riding along it. Significant snowfall could be in our future but we will watch as the week goes on.
Temperatures will begin to rise Wednesday and Thursday during the daytime, with cold temps still persisting overnight. Temps during the day this week should be around 15-25 on the mountain, with higher temps at the base. Low temps during the overnight hours will drop into the teens, but we seem to be out of the arctic temperature plunge for the time being. Have a great time snow-riding in the Vail Valley and THINK SNOW!

Cold snap will continue
January 17, 2008 —
It was another very COLD day in the Rockies today, with cold air not budging much the next few days.
We will continue to see these temps through the weekend and early part of next week, preceding a brief warming trend mid week (Jan. 23-35). Skiing is still quite good on both mountains, but it still amazes me how 17 inches of snow can be skied off in just two days. Very little snow in the forecast, although the Weather Channel seems to think we will see snow showers all week. A quick shot of snow moves in tonight and tomorrow with very little accumulation (1-3 inches).
Temperatures should remain cold with these intermittent storms moving through. Cold again tonight with temps below the zero degree mark, and the same on Friday. Temps in the single digits on mountain and teens at the base. Winds will increase as this short lived storm passes through within the next 36-48 hours. If you are planning on snow-riding this weekend, please layer up appropriately, as the wind chill temps will be very cold (15-20 below zero).
Also, as David O reports, National Skier Safety Week begins Saturday the 19th: keep a look out for strict enforcement in high traffic areas of Vail and Beaver Creek mountains. There will also be some very interesting activities going on all week, including beacon training, an opportunity to help Ski Patrol “sweep” the mountain at the end of the day, and my favorite, the Flight for Life helicopter landing and demonstration. If you would like more information on weekly activities call (970) 479-4610 or ask anyone in a yellow or red jacket on the mountain.
Enjoy, and STAY WARM.

Sun, light snow in the forecast
January 14, 2008 —
Good day to all, hope that the weekend treated you well; sorry about the knee Dave, but I hope everyone else had a chance to "shred the gnar pow.” It was an eventful and tragic weekend in Vail, again. I hope everyone will take notice and please, stay in bounds for a while, the skiing within the ropes is amazing.
The outlook for this week looks more like it should for mid January, historically, with sunny skies and fairly mild temps.
We have another shot at some snow Tuesday night and Wednesday, but many forecasters are calling for a "moisture starved" system to move through the area from the NW mid week with limited snowfall.
However, I said the same thing last week, and boy was I wrong (although I love it when I'm short on the inches, not long). Temps for the week should be in the low to mid 20s all week with the exception being Wednesday when we should see temps fall into the mid to low teens during the day, with light snow showers all day. Lows at night will be in the teens, keeping the snow fresh.
Forecasters at snowforecast.com are calling for a strong ridge of high pressure to dominate most of the month, with few storms rolling in from the North West. We will keep watch as the weeks move on, but don't expect any large powder days for some time.
Tuesday night and Wednesday should bring a total of 6-8 inches by Wednesday evening in the Vail Valley, locally higher amounts are possible in the Steamboat region. Happy skiing to all!
