August 15, 2008 —  This weekend the life of Earl Eaton will be celebrated in an on-mountain ceremony to take place Saturday, Aug. 16 at 11 a.m. at Wildwood Shelter at the top of Vail Mountain.

As my father - who worked with Earl in the 1960s - said to me today, "Earl was a doer," a man of action whose hand's-on approach helped build Vail and Vail Mountain in a very literal sense.

In a time when Vail's worldwide reputation is a bit posh, it's good to remember our roots in tough, yet visionary, men like Earl. For thoughts on the life and character of Earl Eaton, visit this link.

Please be patient as it may take a moment to load this page.

This is my dad. I am very moved by your description of him, you know him nearly as well as I do. The picture of my horse nosing him with love, as all of nature always has, is especially close to my heart. The man was eighty years old in this photo, he was at my place in Bailey, CO in order to help me out with some work. He kicked my ass. The man dead lifted a 90 pound bag of quick crete after working the whole day long on building a foundation for my shed. He showed me how to make a square and sound foundation for a building, as well as how to get a crooked nail into a stubborn board with the aid of Vaseline. The gate that he was hanging in this photo was true to gravity and all other forces of nature, it has held up. He has built a nest and a treasure inside of my heart--as he has done for many others but I think that I got the best of him. I am such the lucky one, he is my dad.
