Super delegate Debbie Marquez of Edwards off to make history at DNC in Denver

By David O. Williams

August 23, 2008 —  I was sports editor of the Vail Daily when I first met DNC Committeewoman and pledged Barack Obama super delegate Debbie Marquez back in 1991.

In those days the part-owner and founder of the popular Edwards Mexican restaurant Fiestas owned a now-defunct Vail Valley raft company called Raftmeister, and she invited me on a fam (familiarization) trip to Costa Rica.

Dozens of U.S. and Canadian raft and kayak guide companies converged on the Costa Rican capital of San Jose at the invitation of a local raft company owned by some ex-patriot Americans looking to promote whitewater sports in the country known as the Switzerland of Central America.

I was a cub sports reporter straight out of journalism school at Metro State College in Denver, and Debbie showed me the incredible opportunities available to me as a journalist in Vail. In the ensuing years my job has taken me heli-skiing in Alaska and to the Winter Olympics in Italy. I think in part Debbie shares some credit for opening up that world to me.

She also deserves a lot of credit as a Democratic stalwart in a county that leaned Republican even four or five years ago. She committed to Obama months ago, fended off the advances of both Bill and Hillary Clinton and now she’s off to Denver to make history by casting her vote to nominate the first African American presidential candidate for a major American political party.

I couldn’t be more psyched for her as she reaps the rewards of years of hard work. She has been a tireless advocate for the working class in Eagle County, and she richly deserves this moment. Check out our story in Real Lives for a little more on Debbie’s rise to political prominence.

Once again I’ll be following in her footsteps -- a trip to the Mile High City to cover the DNC for a couple of Web sites, including this one. Hopefully I’ll run into her down there and be able to buy her a marg or two.
