Beaver Creek Rodeo series kicks up its heels Thursdays in Avon

June 17, 2009 — The Beaver Creek Rodeo keeps the spirit of the Old West alive during the popular Thursday night outing in Avon. The eighth annual Beaver Creek Rodeo Series gets under way Thursday, June 18 at 5 p.m. and continues each Thursday night through Aug. 20.

Round up the kids for this real ski town rodeo complete with bull riding, calf and team roping, bareback, barrel and burro racing and mutton bustin’ and calf scramble for the little ones.

Top chefs from Beaver Creek and the Vail Valley offer traditional Western barbecue and a variety of other items. Participating restaurants include Dusty Boot, Fiesta Jalisco, Moe’s Barbecue, Occasionally Keegan, Rimini and more.

The rodeo grounds are located at Traer Creek in Avon, just east of Chapel Square. Join in the fun each Thursday from 5-8 p.m. beginning June 18 and continuing through Aug. 20. There will be no rodeo on July 30.

Event Schedule:

Gates open at 5 p.m.

Face painting - 5-8 p.m

Restaurant and vendor booths - 5-8 p.m.

Rodeo events - 6-8 p.m.

Bareback - 6:15 p.m.

Calf scramble - 6:30 p.m.

Team roping - 6:45 p.m.

Mutton bustin' - 7 p.m.

Barrel racing - 7:15 p.m.

Burro racing - 7:30 p.m.

Bull riding - 7:45 p.m.

The Rodeo Royalty includes a trio who serve as the Beaver Creek Rodeo Ambassadors. This year’s Royalty includes Queen Becca Bosworth, Queen Attendant Sarah Martin and Princess Maria Fernanda Gonzales.

Rodeo Queen Becca Bosworth attends Battle Mountain High School and serves as the Vice President of the Horse Rangers 4-H Club. She shows English, Western, and

Dressage and also is a wrangler at Beaver Creek Stables. Becca is a member of Future Business Leaders of America, BMHS Ski Team, and BMHS Varsity Lacrosse Team.

Serving as Queen Attendant this year, Battle Mountain student Sarah Martin is President of the 4-H Club where she competes in English, Western and Hunter Jumper shows and Dressage. Her other interests include snowboarding and gymkhanas competition.

Maria Fernanda Gonzales has been named this year’s Rodeo Princess. Maria attends Vail Christian High School where she is a member of the gifted students program. Her interests are volleyball, basketball, reading and writing songs and she enjoys showing English, Western, and Dressage. Maria also serves as the historian for the Horse Rangers 4-H Club.

Tickets to the rodeo are $20 for VIP seating, $15 for Adults (ages 18-64), $10 for Seniors (ages 65 and up), $7 for Youth (ages 13-17), and children 12 years old and under are free.

Tickets are available in-person in advance at the Beaver Creek Information Center or the evening of the event at the on-site rodeo box office.

Kids can get involved in the calf scramble and mutton bustin’. Height and weight limitations apply for mutton bustin’ and parents must sign a release for both events. Sign-ups will take place at the information booth from 5-6:30 p.m. the night of the rodeo. Other children’s activities include pony rides and face painting.

Free parking is available directly across the street from the rodeo grounds, with a one-minute walk to the site. Alcoholic beverages, pets, and glass containers cannot be brought onto the rodeo grounds. All bags are subject to be searched by security.
