End-of-the-season parties are as much a part of spring skiing as corn snow and sunscreen. In early days, the on-mountain parties were impromptu, grassroots style, and only locals and hard-core skiers would stick around for these sunny, lazy, April days.
Things have changed. The event that started as Revolution Spring, with a $5,000 budget and a fledgling company called Red Bull, has now morphed into Spring Back to Vail - currently budgeted for $750,000 and sponsored by companies such as Pepsi, Coors Light, Burton Snowboards, Volvo and Bacardi, to name a few. Former acts brought to town include Snoop Dogg, Kid Rock, and Counting Crows.
This year features Gov’t Mule and Ben Harper, plus Kottonmouth Kings, the Pond Skimming Championship, and too many bar parties and smaller concerts to count (see schedule in break-out box).
What used to be a time to relax and let the season wind down has become a time to crank up the volume and go out with a bang.
The same is true for the beginning of the season. Vail used to open with a “ramp-up” approach, attracting more and more skiers as the calendar approached Christmas.
Now the season opens with World Cup skiing and Snow Daze, a concert and event series which brings in similar big-name acts, and has a similar operating budget.
Increased budgets indicate that Vail Resorts officials see that the program is an effective way to bring people to town. Other ski areas seem to have noticed. Breckenridge hosts the Spring Massive each year, Copper Mountain offers the Sunsation concert series, and Whistler/Blackcomb offers the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.
The event also comes hand-in-hand with a lodging deal (for more on that, click here).
