June 23, 2008 — The much-beloved (and FREE) summer tradition of Bud Light Hot Summer Nights continues tomorrow with the Drew Emmitt Band taking the Ford Amphitheater stage at 6:30 p.m.
Drew Emmitt, the dynamic lead singer and mandolin player with the popular jam-band Leftover Salmon, is a true renaissance man on musical instruments. Playing mandolin, guitar, fiddle, banjo, harmonica, flute and electric guitar, he's a string virtuoso to be reckoned with. He excels in unique, energetic mandolin licks, and his influences include a pantheon of musical heroes including Lowell George, Steve Morse, Duane Allman, John Cowan, Bill Monroe, Sam Bush, Hot Rize and New Grass Revival
The free music gets under way at 6:30 p.m., but the party starts an hour earlier when the gates open.
Full concessions are served at the Amphitheater, where many claim you can find the best burger in town. Picnic blankets, food and sealed non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. Please leave dogs, alcoholic beverages and lawn chairs at home.
The series continues each Tuesday night through August 19, with the exclusion of July 29. ALSO IN TOWN THIS WEEK: AIRBORN
The downvalley summer event of the season continues Thursday with Airborn headlining the American National Bank ShowDown Town free concert series in Eagle Town Park. The evening features free music, as well as kids’ activities, food and beverage for sale in the park and – of course – great picnicking.
For the past 37 years, Airborn has been rocking the Vail Valley with their unique style of American roots music that moves from blues and country to classic rock and folk. They have recorded three albums to date, scored music to motion pictures and still boast three original members from their 1972 line-up; Alan Echtler, Mike Peters and Debra Echtler.
A special feature of this week’s concert is the Little Buckaroo’s Night at ShowDown Town, a western themed adventure for all the young fans in attendance. Everyone is invited to come out in their best wild west costumes, where they’ll enjoy storytelling with the world-famous J.B. Tucker “Showman” and the Buckaroo Bonanza Bunch.
American National Bank ShowDown Town continues every Thursday night through July 24, with the live music kicking off each evening at 6:30 p.m. Additional performances include the southern rock of Devon Allman’s Honeytribe, the rollicking swing of Big Daddy Lee & the Kingbees and the Memphis-inspired blues of LipBone Redding.
For the 2008 season of ShowDown Town, the Vail Valley Foundation, which presents the series, has committed to increasing the number and quality of children’s activities at each show. Throughout the six weeks of shows, activities will include an air guitar-fest, stilt walkers and a petting zoo, to name a few.
For more information on the American National Bank ShowDown Town concert series, including a schedule of the children’s activities each week, please visit www.showdowntownconcerts.com or call (970) 949-1999.
Picnics, friendly dogs and coolers are allowed. The American National Bank ShowDown Town concert series is a project of the Vail Valley Foundation.
