August 2, 2009 — The Vail Recreation District's (VRD) youth sports camps continue this summer with opportunities for children to enjoy basketball, soccer, figure skating and gymnastics in August. The camps offer young athletes the chance to learn new sports, develop new skills and refine existing skills. Camp programs are as follows:
Vail Figure Skating Camp: Aug. 3-6, Ages Four and Older at Dobson Ice Arena
This is a new four-day camp for figure skaters of all skill levels, ages four and older and Dobson Ice Arena. The camp includes on-ice instruction, off-ice classes and freestyle sessions for half the day, followed by outdoor adventures and excursions to the Imagination Station, Vail Gymnastics Center, Vail Nature Center and more the remainder of the day.
Afternoon adventures will be organized by VRD Youth Services. Costs are $65 per day for skaters at a Basic to Junior Prep skill level or $85 per day for those at a Pre Pre skill level and above. Call 479-2271 for details.
VRD Back to Basics All-Star Basketball Academy: Aug. 3-6, Ages 6 and Older at Battle Mountain High School, Eagle-Vail
Participants will be coached by former NBA All-Star, All-Pro Sydney Moncrief and his award winning staff during this four-day camp, which will concentrate on learning new skills while building on the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork and defense. Camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and costs $145. Call 479-2280 for details.
VRD Major League Soccer Camp: Aug. 10-14 for Ages 6 and Older at the Ford Park Athletic Fields
This is the final MLS camp of the summer that has professional coaches from England teaching participants ball skills, passing, shooting and offensive and defensive techniques. Cost is $168 for a full day, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or $133 for a half day, 9 a.m. to noon. Children must be eight years or older to attend the full day session. Call 479-2280 for details.
Vail Gymnastics Summer Camp: Aug. 17-21 and Aug. 24-28 for Ages 4 and Older at the Vail Gymnastics Center
A week-long summer camp for children ages four and older that will not only include gymnastics, but also outdoor adventures such as hiking, visiting local parks and excursions to Dobson Ice Arena, the Imagination Station, Vail Nature Center and more. Children will be grouped according to age and skill level. Costs are $125 for a half day, 9 a.m. to noon, or $150 for a full day. Children must be six years or older to attend the full day camp. Junior Tennis Lessons: All Summer for Ages 5 and Older at the Vail Tennis Center
Junior tennis lessons take place each week with a ratio of six students per coach. Lessons are from 9 to 10 a.m. for ages five to six, 10 to 11 a.m. for ages seven to nine, 11 a.m. to noon for ages 10 to 12 and noon to 1 p.m. for ages 13 to 17. Costs are $65 per week or $60 per week for consecutive weeks. Call 479-2294 for details.
